In response to the OP's question about food, I'd share that on my last trip through NRT I was surprised at the lack of food vendors that accepted AMEX. I prefer to use that card as it has no foreign transaction fees. I felt more vendors in BKK accepted AMEX. But, I did find many of the vendors in NRT took US cash and gave Japanese Yen in change. I'll be passing through NRT in May and June, and plan to have some extra cash on hand for food.
