Right. But that excess fee could be massive, depending on the airline in question. To Europe
DL would charge you $285 each for those 3-4 bags.
Emirates would charge you $175 per bag (and has a 59 linear inch limit now, not 62).
Air India charges $200/bag. And some airlines have embargo periods where excess baggage is not permitted at all.
I have no idea what airline you're flying so those may not apply, but it will almost certainly not be $50/bag extra you're looking at in fees. Really worth considering alternate options once the weight and transport factor comes into play. You said you're willing to consider storing them the day before. That's going to be a few hundred dollars in extra vehicle rental and storage costs, to say nothing of the round-trip travel time and still needing to deal with schlepping the bags around the terminal and parking the car and such to manage getting them into storage.
