Admission time here, but I have a clear recollection when I applied to be BA cabin crew (admittedly back in 1997) that it was a core part of the process. Interview 4 of 5 was the foreign language interview, and it ran a streak of fear among many.
I am not sure... But, being as I joined the company 10 years after you applied, and it was not a requirement then, I would say, somewhere in that 10 year period.. ^
