You can downgrade to Explorer after 12 months, so you can do what HBKFan75 says. However there are a couple things you should know:

I think it may be worth applying for Explorer and cancelling the Club card instead of going the downgrade route.
These are good points. Or perhaps look into a downgrade to the no-fee United card and apply for an Explorer separately to get the bonus and still keep your credit history from the Club card.
