I have been charged an extra day for a FOUR minute late return time at Avis. Not some sort of extra hour - an extra DAY at the rate of 34GBP.

I tried to fight it through Avis, but they wouldn't budge. They said they have no grace period.

Fortunately, I disputed it through Diner's Club and won. Avis never responded to the dispute and the extra charge was dropped after their window for counter-dispute passed.

I've been late at Hertz before by a few minutes with no problems. The 59 minute window sounds right for them, although I've never returned a car 90 minutes late to see for sure. (Usually when I'm late, I'm waaaaay late and the expected full-day charge is added.)
