RobertHanson's post shows again why this card isn't necessarily a great choice if you're based in the US and don't have any other relationship with M&M. Some of his points aren't strictly correct, mind -- although I'm aware that the 'solutions' I mention below won't work for everyone:

LH miles expire three years after you earn them. The only exception is if you spend on the MM cc at least once every single billing period.
Elite status with M&M will protect your miles, as will holding some of the credit cards issued by their partners in other countries.
