I don't opt out but I nevertheless like to avoid the nude-o-scopes as much as possible on the grounds that, given how often I travel, I'd rather not expose myself unnecessarily to whatever health risks are involved. This means I'll walk to another checkpoint but I don't subject myself to a grope, er I mean patdown voluntarily.
I'll probably do a volunteer shift in the next day or two and double check on this to report back with total certainty.
I had to have a patdown awhile ago when I had a broken knee in a brace and entered the PreCheck line before it had the other scanners. I definitely would go out of the way to avoid that again.
The newer scanners are called AIT - Advanced Imaging Technology.
