There's a really good series of authors who compose "topographic" books.. they're not really stories but they're not really non-fiction.. talks about about the history and current way of life with some photos to help illustrate the city.

I own something like 4 or 5 of these books from Macau, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur and Tel Aviv. They're really, really good.
