I'm actually quite surprised that proof of onward journey is not routinely asked for. It should be consistently asked for when it is a requirement for entry, as it then becomes one of the conditions of being allowed to board. In fact I always have all my itineraries easily accessible as at some point during my multi-leg travel someone somewhere wants to see my exit strategy from the next country.
