Actually I think putting people into like seats is the issue, at least how AA has the "like seats" algorithm set up. Cluster is (half) the word the that comes to mind for how it's currently handled.

Sometimes it feels like the system sees original seat 7A and assigns 30E as the new one on the basis that it's "like" the original seat in the sense that both are on the plane.

I recently heard that AA was retooling their algorithm to disregard the "like seats" variable and attempt to assign the same seat number if it exists on the new airplane, but this is a recent enhancement and I'm not sure if it's live yet.

Between that and the 737s conversions to the F16Y144 configuration wrapping up soon, hopefully the issue will be ameliorated somewhat (only to start up again now that the LUS A319s are being reconfigured, but that's another thread...).
