$10 is a steep increase, but on balance, I think the $45 fare is a fair price, and comparable to what you'd pay in most other U.S. cities for a cab ride of that length and duration. At the old $30 and $35 fares, I think the cabbies were getting short-changed. In fact, when I used to live in Brooklyn Heights, which is closer to JFK than any destination in Manhattan, my metered fare was higher than either the $30 or $35 flat fares.
