make sure the upgrade books into P or higher before you bank on getting 8k extra PQMs. $600 sounds low to me for the r/t to be honest ... might get you into R or PN or something that does not earn 200%.

Also, you can look for cash upgrade offers for the XN ticket, sometimes UA offers these.
