Austria -- Intl Driver's License /Motorway at CH, D, A border

I am going to drive from MUC to ZRH in a few days. I will drive a very short distance thru A. I have heard some nonsense about the Austrians requiring intl driver's license for a U.S. license. Is that still true? Going from D to A there is probably no active border control. What about CH to A on the? My only concern is if some ******* border agent checks for my driver's license. I really don't have time to get that before I leave.

There is also the hassle of Austrian autobahn vignettes for my German rental car. (In addition to my Swiss one.) On the way down I think I will not be on any Austrian autobahns since I will probably go via Lindau and Bregenz.

On the way back I will drive due north on A13/E43 from Chur past Lichtenstein. Here it looks like it makes sense to take the (new_ Austrian autobahn but many not be worth it if I have to get a vignette.....

Any suggestions?
