I finally got a response back from Brussels Airlines. It took them 3 months to respond, but when they did, they offered the full EUR 600 without any questions.
I had a evening BRU-WAW flight cancelled in mid December 15. The flight cancellation made the trip completely unnecessary, so I just asked them to fly me home to BHX at next opportunity.
They finally replied last week saying they would be paying the EU compensation of EUR 400 plus a full refund for the flights.
Better late than never, although I have no idea why it would take 2.5 months to reply to such an 'open & shut' case.
