To be more precise here, what happened is that I received a notification (email + sms + voice message) of my luggage being recovered at the Airport, asking me whether I should pick it up or whether it should be delivered. So I called the guy, saying they should deliver it to my home. Then the guy said something on the phone about a time, but I didn't understand exactly what it was, if it was the time the baggage would leave the Airport, or the time the courier would arrive home. Then the guy almost hung up on me and I never got a written confirmation of the delivery window (neither by sms or email), so I thought "okay, whatever, let's see when the guy arrives" (I only have a 15min walk from the office to my place). Looking back I know I should have called back to ask again.
But then (and this time it's my fault, I recognize it), when the guy arrived and tried to call me, I didn't answer because sometimes my phone doesn't ring (doesn't even vibrate, it's weird), and I'm not watching my phone every minute. The guy left a voice message saying he would wait 15min in front of my door, and then leave. I called the guy back once I noticed the message, just when he was about to leave, but then he argued it was too late (but I mean my city is a 2h drive from the Airport so an extra 15min would probably not have made a big difference).
It happened to me once already that my baggage got lost on a connection (but it was a short connection so I was more understanding as to why it has been delayed). But in this case I don't remember scheduling any delivery, and the courier just showed up at my place at like 7:00 am in the morning, something I was really not expecting. I'm telling that to explain why I wasn't expecting a clear delivery window to be given to me, and didn't worry too much about that. But being in a situation where you couldn't answer your phone when the courier arrives, I realize the consequences of not scheduling things properly (simply because you might not be able to answer your phone during the 15min the courier is at your door).
And like Xandrios said, in the case of Amazon and co., UPS come at your home a couple of time, and eventually will leave the package at the local post office. I don't believe they cannot send baggage by regular postal service: people order large objects all the time (hell you can order furniture on Amazon). I think luggage services should have 2 options : the fast "courier" service when you go on vacation. You get your luggage delivered at your hotel or you have time to sit around all day (because you're on vacation and you don't have any change of clothes). And the slow "regular postal service" where they should just transfer your luggage to the local postal service. I mean all I had in this luggage was a pile of dirty clothes, I don't care if they arrive next week instead of tonight. But this is a discussion for another day.
Looking back at all this, I realize that the next time it happens (I hope it won't), I will properly schedule the time of delivery, and insist they provide me with a clear window by sms/email.
