Drive to YVR (instead of SEA) for cheaper flight... Worth it?
We live near SEA. We fly to Jpn/HKG 3-4x a year. Flights are almost always cheaper from YVR. So sometimes we fly out of YVR if the saving is substantial. I realize it's a matter of personal opinion as to what constitutes saving that's enough to justify the drive. But I still wanted to get different opinions on this.
It's 280 miles roundtrip from where we live to YVR, so let's say ~$100USD is the cost of driving. Then there's the pain in the as* factor ('PITA factor'), which I haven't exactly decided yet how to quantify. But I'd put my PITA cost for the SEA-YVR round trip drive (including all the border hassle) at ~$400. That means >$500 price difference justifies the drive. I've got a HKG trip coming up later this year where the flight fare is $750 cheaper for the family from YVR. Based on the above, I should jump on the YVR departure. Yet, for some reason, the drive to YVR feels longer and longer each time. Maybe it's me getting older. Maybe I should re-eval my PITA value.
For the Seattlites on this forum, what $ amount would you place on the PITA cost of having to drive up to YVR?
