That might be a viewpoint held more strongly by someone who booked a more expensive long haul ticket and is disappointed when they cance. They would only get back part of the taxes and fares, which are themselves a small part of the total fare+carrier charge. For example, cancelling an I-class CW ticket. £50-100 back is only "a few quid" relative to the total cost of such a ticket.
