Yes, I've successfully done so after arriving at LHR on a BA flight and then departing on a UA flight (for which I'd already paid the APD) less than 24 hours later. I sent an email explaining the situation and included a copy of the BA reservation and boarding pass. Refund was quick and no questions were asked.
I'd bet that the LAX-LHR-LAX itinerary is not eligible for an APD refund as LHR was the ticketed destination (however short the stay) and not a transit pint.
