The Grand Hyatt is a big busy place that hosts alot of tourists/events/conferences. You won't get very personalized or even great service here, and the rooms can be a bit tired, but from my experience, the suites are large and its very convenient to come and go from. Grand Club is well staffed and has plenty of drinks/snacks available as well as an evening hor d'oerves/dessert hour and decent breakfast offering. Alcohol is on the honor system.

Andaz 5 Av is a few blocks away across from the library and more intimate and "boutiquey". They offer a proper breakfast for Diamonds (famous for their pancakes), free in room snacks/non-alc minibar and host an evening wine happy hour in the lobby area. Honestly, I think this is the better choice for a birthday celebration - especially if you can get the Splash suite. You're getting much closer to a Park Hyatt vs a Hyatt experience at the Andaz IMO. (Seems most FT'ers prefer the Andaz 5av over the PH anyway)
DSUs normally book into the Splash Suite, but can sometimes be upgraded farther (for instance, if your suite isn't ready when you check in) to one bedroom suites with views toward the library and park (but no bathtub).

BTW, what birthday? What do you want to do in NYC? I would suggest different hotels for 18, 21, 30, 50, and 80, for instance.
