Here are my 5 steps for handling airport delays, roughly in order of priority:

1) Eat a meal. Often the wait at an airport aligns with a regular mealtime. As delays set in it's even more likely to happen. If it's more or less time to eat, eat.

2) Free airport WiFi is your friend. It's not the 20th century anymore. Or even 2008. Most airports have free WiFi access nowadays. Sharing the bandwidth with dozens or hundreds of other people means it's generally not suitable for streaming video, but there's plenty there for catching up on email, blogs, news, etc. Ubiquitous airport wifi has made me both more productive business-wise at airports as well as more entertained.

3) Call. Waiting for a flight at the airport is a good time to catch up with colleagues, friends, and relatives via phone.

4) Stretch your legs. Get a bit of exercise, explore food options (for item #1), find a quiet place (for #3), find a newsstand, etc. by walking the airport.

5) Have an offline alternative. At some point there won't be reasonable wifi access, or your batteries will be running low while recharging stations are mobbed, or you'll just be tired of technology entertainment. Bring a book, a magazine, or a newspaper, or buy one at the newsstand you found in #4 to keep yourself engaged while unplugged.
