I'm sure many people skip the return as I did when they are making a permanent move to another part of the US (or the world). I think it's expected when the RT economy fares are hundreds less than the one-way tickets (exception: SWA). I have never heard of anyone being backcharged.
But I'm sure the airline and your fellow travelers would be most appreciative if you cancel the return segment and free up your seat.
