That is my understanding as well. It is not an insignificant cost to install these things - and at the time I don't think large capital investments in something like this was feasible - so, you get someone else to foot the bill, take a lower income stream down the road, and sign a contract that is basically an anchor around your neck...
DL was installing their AVOD systems on quite a few aircraft when CO made this decision. Back then the DISH channels were free in Y, but CO/DTV charged a ridiculous price for the DTV service. Did they take into consideration that pax were going to hate the ad's and the pricing for this system?
Also to note - they dumped a lot of the overhead video systems on these A/C in favor of DTV which IIRC was free. Pax lost in the end.
