I used the IB wifi to check that the trains were working from Hartford, which they were, as well as PHL, so my connection was going to be OK. So in your shoes I'd have got off at Hartford, rather than risking an overnight there.
I didn't think of that option at all. I'm not sure it would have got me there in time though. I got over 3 hours driving time from Google maps when on the ground at Hartford, and rejected trying to rent a car as a result, but didn't think of the train. If I ever need to do such a trip again (which is unlikely) I will bear that in mind!
