There are two routes on the airtrain - one goes clockwise so T1 to T8 and then off to Howard's Beach or Jamaica before coming back to T1, and the other is just inter-terminal going anti-clockwise loop so T8, T7 etc. to T1. For T8 to T7 you should wait for the inter-terminal train and it is one stop to T7.
