There are two routes on the airtrain - one goes clockwise so T1 to T8 and then off to Howard's Beach or Jamaica before coming back to T1, and the other is just inter-terminal going anti-clockwise loop so T8, T7 etc. to T1. For T8 to T7 you should wait for the inter-terminal train and it is one stop to T7.

All in all, an annoying saga, which was probably the result of the pilot not taking the advance weather reports into consideration and so not loading enough fuel at the outset - the Americans on the plane were very surprised at this, and I guess they are pretty familiar with these scenarios.
I think that is somewhat unfair. Pilots have no more wish to divert than passengers. AA pilots have lots of experince generally and of flying in to JFK at all times of the year. I don't think you can base your judgement on the speculation of a few other passengers who wouldn't know one end of a loadsheet from another.
