thanks for your replies. It has turned out much more complicated that I originally thought. So far, I reserved a trip for myself, husband, and son with United, LAX to Istanbul one way. It was the only way it seems we could get there together. Now I am looking for a return trip from IST to LAX for myself and my son - I was unable to find a single revenue route that matched a rewards route, and I spoke to several United agents. I have miles from other airlines, such as Delta and American, but there is hardly anything left and I don't think we have quite enough miles for both of us.
At this point, it looks like our only option is to purchase a revenue ticket for both of us, but the tickets are really expensive right now. Anyone have any tips to find a super cheap IST-LAX ticket around July 1?

How did you book all 3 on the outbound? All using miles? In doing so, you've actually created a new problem - due to fare restrictions, a one way IST-LAX will most likely actually be more expensive than the round trip (at least in my experience). Hence if you're limits with miles, it's always better to book one (or more) people round trip with $$ rather than book two people one way with miles and try and book both with $$ one way on the return.
