It was either August 1989, when four of us heading from Chicago, IL. to the United Soccer Booster Convention [R.I.P.] in Tacoma, WA. had a rental car (I wound up driving it into Vancouver, BC., Canada.), or in August 1991 when the route was from Chicago to San Diego, CA., but we drove from Chicago to Los Angeles on old U.S. route 66.
We had a weekly rate for a compact class car from a rental car company. I've forgotten how much it was. Wasn't as simple to find the cheapest rental rate a quarter-century ago.
