Your AT&T SIM card is going to be pre-installed in the phone, so you want to cancel service to invalidate the SIM card before you sell it, or you can open the box to take out the SIM card.

There is no need to open the box if you are going to flip the phone. The line is active the day AT&T ships your order.
Now, If you sell your phone as unlocked you may want to remove pre-installed AT&T sim and for that you have to open.
Again, Your service is active when you get the phone.
