First of all I grew up in a place/time/home where decency made sure you'd let old folks, handicapped and parents with babies in front of you.
I grew up in that same time and place. In that time and place, we didn't have to worry about overhead space, because airlines didn't charge for baggage, and baggage wasn't generally mishandled and brought off the airplane in a timely manner.
The airlines have brought this problem upon themselves. They incentivize bringing too much crap on board an airplane that when full doesn't have storage space for all the crap people bring on board. Then they make the problem worse not enforcing the carry on rules and they don't ensure that overhead storage in F is reserved for the people who pay extra to sit there.
So yes, I don't think this new policy is a wise move by United.
