I've happily used them several times.

I haven't seen this lately, but in the past I've seen "On request" bookings. In those cases, they would contact the hotel and determine if you could get the price - you might succeed or not.

But I've only noticed confirmed bookings for at least the past couple years, although perhaps others have seen differently.
