My experience, too. In one instance at YVR they required the 6 or 8 of us with the tight connection to be "driven" to the new gate. It also involved US Customs and they moved us through there quickly, too.
I hope that happens to me when going to BOS via YYZ with 1.35 hr connection, if need be. Seating in J but no status.
