I find Japanese check-in agents ask for return/onward ticket all the time unless you are a national of the destionation you are going.
Same thing at JFK. I was on a o/w award JFK-NRT-BKK-PER and they asked if I had a ticket leaving PER. I did on TG and I had it printed out already.
Similarly when I flew JFK-ICN-BKK on a o/w award they asked as well on OZ.
