You should expect the free UG to remain out there as a possibility. But, it will likely become more and more rare, even for Diamonds.

I never expect to be upgraded. For me, it's simply a nice perk that appears from time to time. If I buy economy, I expect to sit in economy. If I really want first, I pay for it. If a FCM offer is good, I'll take it.

I retain PM status for flexibility trying to book award seats (no charge for refunds) and for the incredible service during rebooking for IROPS. Even if they took away unlimited upgrades, I wouldn't find another airline that does a better job for me.
IROPS - on time performance, low cancellation rate - opportunities for FCM -what's not to like?
