You should expect the free UG to remain out there as a possibility. But, it will likely become more and more rare, even for Diamonds.

I never expect to be upgraded. For me, it's simply a nice perk that appears from time to time. If I buy economy, I expect to sit in economy. If I really want first, I pay for it. If a FCM offer is good, I'll take it.

Quite frankly, Delta was smart enough to make FCM work, and it works. I've done tickets in paid F in the last two years more often than not. And not buying into F, I tend not to even consider an upgrade as happening. I would be very annoyed if Delta dropped unlimited complimentary upgrades, for the occasion that it is available.

I retain PM status for flexibility trying to book award seats (no charge for refunds) and for the incredible service during rebooking for IROPS. Even if they took away unlimited upgrades, I wouldn't find another airline that does a better job for me.
