I've checked in cardboard boxes many times. Frequently I pick up some amazon parcels at the airport post office, check the contents, then repack into one box, put some extra tape on and check it in.

I've also checked in a 2m cardboard carpet roll centre (inside it a long piece of garage draught proof strip) although that was with LH without trouble.
