My experience, too. In one instance at YVR they required the 6 or 8 of us with the tight connection to be "driven" to the new gate. It also involved US Customs and they moved us through there quickly, too.

Have been on the other side of the coin when SD requested people step aside or remain seated. I've also seen them move people up to near the door.

I'd mention this to the SD in advance. They can get gate info and alert ground staff. I'm not SE but they've done it for me when necessary.
