Source please, aside from anecdotal experience (how do you see it all the time?). I ask seriously, because this claim is made a lot on FT with little proof. I suspect that the vast majority of GS actually earn the status by high margin travel, not corporate handouts to those that don't fly much on high rev fares.
+1 I've met about a dozen GS thru travels, and each of them earned status thru (spoiler alert): traveling!
the idea that they give most GS away to people who don't travel a ton kind of makes no sense (... And really, wudnt that be better for the masses anyway?)
