If you are a non-Canadian UK national holding a UK passport with a valid Canadian eTA, the airline will (should) know in its system.
Right, I'm pretty sure we're in agreement here -- we're making the same assumptions. I expect it to work the way you've described; I just haven't read anything "official" confirming that's indeed the way it works.
