Wife and I just came back from a central America trip and also found the map required payment - which is a surprise as I defintely remember being able to access the map for free in the past. Wifi wasn't available either since we were outside the continental US.

The fact that UA only offers DirecTV paid entertainment on certain flights but brags about its new personal device streaming is ridiculous. Having to pay $8 bucks for prerecorded movies and live map on an international flight is insulting. They should at least make the movie channels complimentary for flights that are outside of the live tv coverage areas.
