Oh gosh. I do have several, like to stupid places like JCPenney, Sears, etc. But, I have NEVER been turned down for a credit card before for that reason. :/
If I close some of those accounts would it be more likely to be approved for the business card?
I wouldn't read too much into the "too many" accounts thing it's just a generic denial reason. I have 32 open cards including 9 with Chase alone. But if your credit file is thick and JCP and Sears aren't your oldest cards I'd look at potentially closing them if for no other reason then that they're deadweight cards.
