This is going to sound odd, but I travel with a few cloves of garlic in my purse. When my ears start to ache, this does the trick for me. It tastes awful and is quite hot, but I'm usually better in hours.
I haven't had to do this while travelling, but I take them with me just in case. I'd hate to subject a fellow passenger to the "aroma".
