I agree with LupineChemist. Of course, a person can go for many versions of their name in everyday life. However, bureaucratically, in Spain there is no concept of middle name, even though many people have compound names. José María is just the given name. Just as an Englishman may have a two-word surname, but still doesn't speak of first and second surnames as we do in Spain. You will never find a box for "middle name" in a form in Spain, just as you don't find a box for "second surname" in France. And a Spaniard called José María does not consider "María" to be his middle name, José María is a unit (which, of course, doesn't preclude his preferring to be called "Jose", or whatever else).
