Indeed, even if they only booked you into J (rather than F) for the transcon, you'd be far better off both TP-wise and comfort-wise than via ORD. The main negative is the shorter TATL flight time which isn't great for a proper night's sleep, but definitely an option worth considering if BA allow it.

You'd just have to check that they book you into a revenue class for the transcon; in my experience they will.

I don't know what class the re-routed UUA sector would get booked into - if revenue you could end up better off, if Z then you may well have to retroclaim for the underlying I fare credit.
