3 days in and around Osaka

I will have a 3 day stopover in Osaka in a few weeks, probably arriving at 7:40 p.m., staying 3 nights, and then leaving on the 5:30 p.m. flight to LAX.

My Japan experience is limited to spending a few nights in Tokyo several years ago. I do like cities but I didn't love Tokyo, it was just so big and sprawling.

I'm interested in visiting Kyoto and Hiroshima on this trip.

Should I stay in Osaka for the three nights and visit these places as day trips? Or just the first night in Osaka? Or head straight to Kyoto/Hiroshima?

Any advice on a 3 day itinerary would be appreciated, I'm not interested in trying to see all the major sights/temples in Kyoto, just the highlights really. In Hiroshima, I'm interested in the history - the Peace Park, museum, etc.

I really don't know what's worth seeing in Osaka, I should probably do some more research on that.
