Actually I can live with AM's onboard service. Sure, it is nothing to write home about, but then neither is the service in Y on the majority of US carriers. The ground service lags behind though - apart from the absence of a lounge we also have the Spanish-only gate announcements. I would have thought there must be some airport regulations to ensure at least some minimum amount of information is relayed to the pax in English. After all, LAX is on US soil! Also, no seat selection on AM for DL-coded flights. Safe to say I will be avoiding AM as a carrier given the choice.
Good to hear things are now better at SFO. Also, to give AM some credit, the MEX lounges are quite decent at least.
