The fact that we keep having to go back to the last century for these oddball one-off incidents shows how rare they are. They really are.

Strangely the most common accident when making a plane trip, being in a car wreck on the way to/from the airport, never seems to make the news at all. And no one seems to worry about that.

There are lots of people who don't like flying, to various degrees. At the mildest level I believe it's responsible for some so-called "air rage" incidents (along with the ban on smoking, which affects nicotine addicts).
