The other option is to tell the 16-year-old to man up and find his way to his gate himself.

Sorry, is that mean? It's probably what I'd do to my own kid at that age, but I'd also teach him about basic airline processes, what to do when flights are delayed/canceled, how to navigate through an airport when there's a gate change, etc. What can I say - I'm kind of a travel geek.
