I highly recommend Lower Sabie if you can get find accommodation. However, the vegetation and habitat is quite similar between that area of Kruger and Sabi Sands, so if you are sold on Sabi Sands then perhaps also look away from the riverine environment.

If you are absolutely sure of driving the route between JNB and Safari, then I'm inclined to recommend you're doing the reverse. I'd fly to your first safari lodge (via either KMIA, SKU, or HDS depending upon where you stay) then self-drive to your second safari lodge, then after morning game drive of your last day (day of departure), you drive to JNB via the Panorama Route. Assuming that you have a night flight out of JNB back to the States, you would enough time to do the drive and the chance to enjoy some beautiful sights along the way, such as God's Window, Three Rondavels and Blyde River Canyon, etc.
I wish we had known about the Panorama Route when we were there. We've only learned about it in the last year. That's a great suggestion as to how to fold it into the OP's trip.
