It's called married segment logic. It's been discussed so many times on this forum - you should try a search and find some good links

Because LAX-SFO has no "R" space the SFO-HND will show R=0. However, if you book the trip and apply a GPU the SFO-HND segment will upgrade and you will be waitlisted LAX-SFO. The GPU is not bound by married segment logic when processing an upgrade.
