On an at the desk note, I was at EWR, term. C premier checkin a little less than two weeks ago, and agent printed BPs behind the counter - they were card stock.
So if you see machines like this:

You'll get thermal paper for sure.

If you find one of these:



You'll get cardstock.

Most agent-produced boarding passes are also on cardstock, although some cardstock are lighter than others.
