I head to this part of the world a few times a year and for April, this is really very good for skyteam and the best choice from NYC.
There is a train that runs right along the coast direct (with a lot of stops) from Milan Centrale to Nice Ville called the Thello. You can buy it on Trenitalia website. If you buy a ticket from the French (SNCF) it seems to always put you on a connection that may or may not really connect well. I'd stick with the Thello.
(I'm becoming a regular on this run. Even with dinner and an overnight near Milano Centrale and the train, you can still save $300-500 for two - and you get to see a bit of Milan over direct flights to NCE.)

Taxis pretty much everywhere in France are outrageous.
Uber works very well in Nice though. My last two trips were Vieux Port to the airport:14Euro, and Airport to the Train Station:16E (whether you're wearing socks with your sandals or not

I notice the guy jams a bunch of buttons on the meter and it starts at about 25 euros and then starts going up rapidly. It hits about 60 euros as we're approaching the airport and I say "hey, buddy--you said 30 euros!" He slams on the brakes, punches the buttons again until it goes up to 80 euros, and then says "It's 80 euros and if you don't like it, you can get out right here!" (We were on some kind of on-ramp). If he didn't have our bags in the trunk, I would have gotten out right there.
Crazy thing is that when we pulled up to the drop off area, a British woman was yelling at her taxi driver for lying to her about how much it would be.
